LaWorld Conference – Barcelona, Spain - May, 2017


Bruce K. Packard, attends 2017 Annual LaWorld Conference on behalf of Riney Packard, PLLC where distinguished attorneys from across the world meet to analyze major legal developments throughout the world. Eighty delegates attended the three day global legal conference, representing forty six member firms.






LaWorld Conference – Barcelona, Spain - May, 2017 – Eagle Yang, representing the newest member firm, Zhonghao, Chongqing, China was warmly welcomed. Rodrigo thanked Howard Sloan, chairing the AGM focus group, for his constant energy and commitment, which has produced a great AGM program and thanked our hosts, Victor and Antonio Cores from Cores y Garcia Pedrerol, Barcelona, for their tremendous effort during the past year which has brought so many of our delegates to their historic and cultural city for this event. Victor and Antonio Cores welcomed everyone to their home city and Antonio said that he hoped that everyone would be inspired and entertained by the three days of business and social activities. Delegates participated in a variety of business and legal workshops, group debates, regional meetings and were entertained with a variety of social activities including a final Anniversary Gala Dinner for around 100 people in the inspirational Gaudi edifice in central Barcelona “Casa Batllo”.

Trade Secrets Are Being Federalized

Trade secret protection has now become a federal law right in the United States for the first time with the addition of the Defend Trades Secrets Act (the “DTSA”). The DTSA is both a criminal and a civil law that can be enforced in state or federal court. This is the first significant foray by the U.S. government into trade secret law, which historically was governed only by various state laws. Rather than create a single federal law, the DTSA leaves the local state laws intact and unchanged.

Affirmation of Judgment in Wrongful Termination Case

Our attorneys recently affirmed the trial court’s summary judgment on behalf of Holiday Hospitality Franchising Inc. and Six Continents Hotels, Inc. dismissing the plaintiffs’ claims for wrongful termination, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and employment retaliation. The Court of Appeals affirmed the judgment, finding that the evidence did not rise to a level that would "enable a reasonable and fair-minded people to differ in their conclusions," and that no genuine issue of material fact existed.

Reversal of Arbitration Award in Accounting Dispute Case

Our attorneys successfully a portion of an arbitration award denying Townes Telecommunications Inc. its attorney’s fees and costs. The Court of Appeals Fifth District of Texas vacated that portion of the award, and otherwise affirmed the arbitration award in favor of Townes Telecommunication. The application for writ to the Texas Supreme Court was denied.

Take-Nothing Judgment for Fortune Dynamic, Inc. in Intellectual Property Case

Our attorneys affirmed a Take-Nothing Judgment on behalf of Fortune Dynamics Inc. by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit against Fortune, an importer and wholesaler of women's footwear. Bernardo Footwear, LLP filed a claim alleging patent infringement on a specific sandal design. The Court ruled that plaintiff failed to satisfy the ordinary observer test and therefore, was not entitled to any of the relief it sought against Fortune.

Verdict in Teacher Abuse Case

Our firm secured a verdict in Dallas County District Court in favor of Mary Oliver, the Dallas Independent School District teacher who was severely beaten in her classroom by another teacher. The jury in the case awarded Ms. Oliver actual and punitive damages as the result of the assault.
